Palestinian girl who stabbed elderly Arab man in terror attack indicted

Prosecutors filed an indictment Friday in the Jerusalem District Youth Court against a 16-year-old Palestinian who attempted to stab and kill Israelis near Jerusalem’s Mahane Yehuda market last month.

The girl allegedly carried out the attack, which was caught on security footage, together with her teenage cousin. The cousin was shot and killed by passersby after the two stabbed a 70-year-old Palestinian man, seated on a bench, whom they had mistaken for a Jew.

She was indicted on two counts of attempted murder and one count of possession of a deadly weapon — the scissors with which she stabbed one person and attempted to stab another.

According to the indictment, the cousin had initiated the attack, telling the defendant on November 22 that she wished to avenge the death of her brother Mahmoud Awad, who died in November 2013 at the age of 24 of wounds sustained when he was hit in the back of his neck by a rubber bullet fired by an Israel Defense Forces soldier eight months earlier during a protest near the Qalandiya checkpoint.

On November 23, the two teenage terrorists, residents of a northern Jerusalem village, went to pray at the al-Aqsa Mosque on the Temple Mount, then boarded the Jerusalem Light Rail toward the city center.

They walked along Jaffa Road carrying scissors and sought their first victim. They approached the elderly Palestinian man, sitting on a bench near the Mahane Yehuda market, from behind, stabbing him in the neck and back before he could stand and flee the scene.

An Israeli passerby ran toward the two after witnessing the stabbing. The defendant’s cousin turned toward him, raised her scissors and tried to stab him, while the defendant also waved her scissors above her head and at nearby onlookers.

The Israeli man pulled a gun and shot the cousin, while another passerby hit the defendant with a chair, causing her to fall to the ground. Police then arrived on the scene and shot at both assailants.

The cousin was pronounced dead on the scene.

The security-camera footage bears out much of the indictment.

The defendant was rushed to an Israeli hospital in critical condition.

A nearby Israeli, 27, was lightly hurt by shrapnel from gunfire against the attackers, police said.

In a separate terror attack hours later, an Israeli man was killed in a stabbing attack at a gas station on Route 443 in the West Bank, close to the central Israeli town of Modiin.

Two others were hurt in the attack and evacuated to the Shaare Zedek Medical Center in Jerusalem for treatment. The Palestinian assailant was shot and killed by Israeli soldiers in the area, Channel 2 reported.
