Palestinian killed, Israeli soldier injured in Qalandiya skirmish

One Palestinian died and one Israeli soldier was injured during an exchange of gunfire in the Qalandiya refugee camp in the West Bank on Thursday.

Soldiers entered the camp, located between Jerusalem and Ramallah, to arrest suspects in a shooting attack. Once inside Qalandiya, the forces were assaulted by a violent mob, the army said.

The soldiers were targeted with guns, hit with an explosive device; Molotov cocktails and rocks were also thrown at them, the IDF said.

“In response to the immediate danger, the force fired toward the gunmen. Hits were confirmed,” an IDF spokeswoman said.

According to Palestinian media, Bilal Omar Za’id, 24, a resident of Qalandiya, was killed in the skirmish, and six others were reportedly wounded.

During the exchange, one soldier was lightly injured when he was struck in the head by rocks that had been thrown at the troops, the Magen David Adom rescue service said.

He was administered medical care on site and was brought to Hadassah Hospital in Jerusalem’s Mount Scopus neighborhood for further treatment, MDA said in a statement.

Earlier on Thursday, another resident of Qalandiya, Wesam Abu Ghuilah, attempted to drive his car into a group of soldiers, but was shot dead before he could carry out the attack, the IDF said.

Ghuilah’s attempted vehicular attack was Thursday’s third attack. In Ariel, a Palestinian moderately wounded two security guards before being shot and killed, and outside of Hebron a Palestinian armed with a screwdriver attempted to stab a group of soldiers but was also shot by security forces and killed.
