50 Senior Foreign Journalists Attend GPO Jerusalem Selichot Tour

The GPO, on Thursday (6 October 2016), during the current 'Days of Awe', hosted approximately 50 foreign journalists stationed in Israel, including from major news outlets, for a special 'Selichot' tour in which they put aside their daily work and immersed themselves – some, for the first time in their lives – in Jerusalem's various Jewish communities. They experienced the world of shofar blasts and unique hymns that have been heard in synagogues for hundreds of years.

Foreign journalists from around the world including Japan, China, South Korea, the United States, Canada, France, Great Britain, Germany, the Scandinavian countries, various African countries and Australia participated in the tour through the alleyways of Jerusalem, which was organized by the GPO Religious Dept. headed by Ariel Katzover. They heard about the significance of the Selichot prayers and the Days of Awe, between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, and the differences between the way the New Year is marked in Judaism and around the world, as well as the customs of the various local communities.

The journalists were led by veteran tour guide Tzvi Goldwag and Achdut Yisrael Synagogue Rabbi Benjy Levin, the grandson of noted Jerusalem rabbi, the late Aryeh Levin; they answered the journalists' questions and were interviewed.

The journalists toured several synagogues, learned about the different customs of the various communities, sampled local delicacies and listened to traditional melodies.

Upon the conclusion of the tour, many of the journalists asked that similar cultural activities be held regarding other Jewish holidays.
